Firefox bookmarks lost under Windows 10 - 08/2020

The latest Firefox update causes all bookmarks to be lost

Actually, this update creates a new empty Firefox profile. You need to reimport your bookmarks into this new profile.

Verification

  • Check if this is the issue. Open Windows Explorer and go to Users/<your-uca-login>. There is a hidden folder named AppData
  • If you don’t see hidden files -> here
  • Continue exploring to AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles
  • If you have two profiles, this is likely the issue. The one with the -release extension is the new empty profile, while the one without this extension is your old profile containing the bookmarks
  • Note: Profile folder names vary from one computer to another.

Resolution

  • Reimport your bookmarks from your old profile
  • Open Firefox, press Ctrl+Shift+B to open the bookmarks manager (or click the menu in the top right corner, then Library, Bookmarks, then at the bottom Show All Bookmarks). The bookmarks library opens.
  • Click Import and Backup then Restore then Choose File and navigate to your old profile (without the release extension) in Explorer at bookmarkbackups/Users/<your-uca-login>/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/uicu74sy.default/bookmarkbackups
  • You will find Firefox’s automatic backups in your old profile
  • Select the most recent one and validate
  • Restart Firefox
