Docker on TP workstations✯
On TP workstations, Docker runs in rootless mode: the container engine executes within your session, without administrator privileges. There is no shared Docker daemon on the machine, and you don't need to install or start anything: everything is ready when you log in.
Docker is ready as soon as you log in✯
The script /etc/profile.d/62-docker-rootless.sh, executed automatically at each login, configures your environment (UID ranges, environment variables, access to the rootless daemon): the docker and docker compose commands work seamlessly in your session, without any manipulation.
docker run hello-world
docker compose up -d
Where to work with Docker✯
- Docker must be used in the
/home/local/<username>/directory: this is the machine's local disk, the only location compatible with build contexts and volumes. - Local volumes must not be mounted in your home
/home/local.isima.fr/<username>/: this directory is a network space (encrypted, backed up), not suitable storage for Docker volumes. - Images and containers remain local to the machine: they disappear at nightly reboot, and the workstation may be reinstalled without notice. Store files to be retrieved from one session to the next in
~/shared(see homedirs), and re-download your images each session.
To remember
- All code must be archived on the GitLab software forge (https://gitlab.isima.fr ).
- To retrieve or publish your images on the ISIMA / LIMOS image registry, use
docker login registry.isima.fras described in the registry documentation.
Alternative: your personal VM✯
On the VM assigned to you, you are root: using Docker there poses no particular problem — classic installation and daemon, volumes wherever you want, persistent data from one session to the next.
