Roaming Linux Profiles✯

Since the 2026-2027 academic year, the Linux user profile ($HOME) is roaming.

  • Your profile follows you regardless of which teaching machine you use.
  • The roaming profile is also configured in your personal VM.
  • This directory is also accessible from Windows machines via the K: drive.
  • You have a 20G quota.

  • If your quota is exceeded, you will no longer be able to open a graphical session on teaching PCs

Best Practices✯

To avoid cluttering your roaming profile (and by extension the file server), you should place large and/or temporary files in the local storage of the PC.

  • Local storage is available at /home/local/$USER

Web Access to your $HOME✯

You can access your files from a web browser

  • You can view and manage files in your roaming profile directly from the https://homeweb.isima.fr page, by selecting the DIRS PEDA server and using your UCA credentials.
  • You can view and manage files in your shared folder (old server) via https://homeweb.isima.fr, by selecting the DIRS server and using your UCA credentials.

Migration of your old data✯

For students already enrolled in previous years
You will find a shared folder in your $HOME, which points to the old file server.

Data on the old server will not be automatically migrated; it is your responsibility to copy your data to your $HOME (excluding the shared folder)

  • The old share is accessible from the shared folder in your $HOME
  • The old server is available under Windows via the P: drive

Common Issues✯

Unable to Open Graphical Session✯

When you have exceeded your quota, you will no longer be able to open a graphical session
You must clean up before you can log in graphically.

To do this, several options: * from https://homeweb.isima.fr * by opening a terminal session. Press Ctrl+Alt+F2, then log in with your UCA account. Note: no characters are displayed for the password.

Locked Applications✯

A number of applications place a lock (.lock file) in the user's $HOME when they are running. This lock can prevent the same application from being opened simultaneously on multiple machines (multiple teaching PCs and/or teaching PCs + personal VM).

The IT department is currently making the necessary configurations to remove this limitation. Each application has a different mechanism and must be handled specifically.

Similarly, this locking mechanism can block the simultaneous opening of multiple remote graphical sessions (RDP).

Backup✯

Data is backed up:

  • Last 8 hours (one snapshot per hour)
  • Beyond that, one daily backup up to 30 days
  • Beyond that, one weekly backup up to 4 weeks
  • Beyond that, one monthly backup up to 3 months
  • You must contact the CRI to request data restoration
